    There is nothing more frustrating than spending your hard earned money on an item, like a laptop, just to find out that in a few years it has become obsolete. With the launch of newer products and new technology these expensive items don't always have the life expectancy we want them or need them from them. Developers are trying to address this problem with designing new systems that don't need to be replaced with new ones, but instead can be made new by using better components.

    Dell has partnered with designer Jacko Chan to create such a machine that won't become outdated. The Loop is a computer that comes in a handful of easy-to-assemble, component-based parts, that you rent instead of buy. When a component becomes outdated it gets replaced through Dell's rental system. All the parts are recyclable which keeps are landfills free of our old gadgets.

    All the components can be easily assembled as there are no screws holding it together. The disassembly takes less than 30 seconds and is done by the company's engineer group. The computer minimizes on waste and is compact to save on space. For cooling purposes,there are ventilation holes in the front of the machine and a cooling fan located in the back portion of the machine. This will keep the machine well ventilated and help save energy by using less power.

    The Dell Loop has a modern sleek design to it that makes this desktop computer very appealing to the eye. The fact that it will never go out of style and won't end up in the landfill gives it high marks for the green factor. As of now the Loop is not on the market, but when it is available you will be able to order it online and have it shipped directly to your home.

    This past April, Fujitsu released the FMV-BIBLO LOOX U/C50NA, a wind powered laptop, sort of. For each laptop that is sold, the company will purchase wind powered “green energy credits” that is equal to the estimated amount of electricity the machine will use over its four year lifespan. So while the actual laptop itself is not physically powered by the wind, Fujitsu is tapping into the eco-conscious market in Japan and helping the environment along the way.

    It is estimated that this laptop will reduce carbon emissions by up to 18 kilograms in its total life span. The company calculates this reduced carbon emissions by assuming the computer will be used for 4.5 hours each day, charged for 4.5 hours a day, and turned off for 15 hours a day. Over a four year period the amount of electricity consumed would be about 45.55 kilowatt hours which is equivalent to 18 kilograms of CO2 emissions.

    The computer is among the company’s smallest models, with a 5.6 inch swivel screen. It runs on the Intel Atom processor just like many machines this size. It also includes a 1GB of memory and up to a 120GB hard disk drive and built-in cellular modem card in some models.
    In addition to the efforts to reduce carbon emissions, this laptop has also received the Energy Star Rating, and will also meet the new requirements for Energy Star once released in June.

    Of course, none of this is for free. The laptop will cost about $1160 and is currently only available in the Japanese market. There has been no information released yet as to when this will be available in the United States.

    Up and coming designer, Ed Boaden, has designed an ecofriendly laptop known as the Modulus. What makes this modular thin notebook appealing and unique, is the ease at which you can assemble and disassemble the various parts with its snap fittings. This design promotes recycling and makes the repair and maintenance of this laptop easy.

    The Modulus is easy to assemble and disassemble as no tools are needed. The casing components can be dismantle by removing the end cap screws by hand, the fit snap hardware allow for absolutely no tools. This makes lengthy repair times a thing of the past. If there are problems with the machine, you can simply remove the component and replace the one faulty piece, instead of shipping the entire notebook off for repair.

    The notebook offers a prop open stand, which lifts the back of the machine, allowing air flow under the notebook. This reduces the amount of energy required to keep the internal components cool. For comfort and minimal strain, the front edge of the keyboard features palm recesses. The notebook is designed to be stackable, with a tongue and groove feature on the bottom side and top side, ideal for the work place.

    The Google PowerMeter underscores, at least for me, why a company like Google is head and shoulders above a company like Yahoo! It's called innovation. Google does it; Yahoo! doesn't. The idea behind Google PowerMeter is simple. With the use of smart meters, homeowners and business can monitor their electricity usage via the internet. Here's how the good folks at Google describe the project:

    Google PowerMeter, now in prototype, will receive information from utility smart meters and energy management devices and provide anyone who signs up access to her home electricity consumption right on her iGoogle homepage. The graph below shows how someone could use this information to figure out how much energy is used by different household activities.

    Some Google employees have been testing the system, and the results speak for themselves:

    "After installing Google PowerMeter, we immediately switched out all our lights for CFLs and our usage dropped by about 13%.
