Dr. Scholl’s Renew Exercise Sandals, an Eco-friendly way to walk

by Rob on April 3, 2008

dr-scholls-renew-sandal.JPGSandals may not exactly qualify as an energy saving gadget (unless you walk rather than drive), but Dr. Scholl’s Renew sandals are an eco-friendly way to get from point A to point B. Virtually everything about the Renew sandal is environmentally friendly, from its biodegradable corn outsole, recycled metal buckle and straps made from hemp or vegetable-tanned leather, to its more eco-conscious tanning process. The foot bed is even constructed of sustainable Brazilian wood. How so, you ask. Well the makers of the Original Dr. Scholl’s have partnered with environmental organization Trees for the Future to plant 10 trees in a deforested area of Brazil for each pair sold, with a goal of planting 50,000 trees.

Dr. Scholl’s Renew sandals are available in women’s whole sizes five to 11 and offered in black, blue, brown, green, red, wine and yellow leather; green and red hemp fabric; and natural hemp canvas. Available from Shoes.com for
$88.99

Talk about a scam, you can purchase the real-deal sandals for less that half the price.

What the hell are you going to do with these? Go around and brag to your friends that you are “greener” than they are?

AJ, I’ve been known to brag every now and again, but I don’t think I’ve ever done so by calling myself “greener.” Besides, the shoes are for the ladies.

OK, but I remember the originals when they were popular back in the 70’s, many women were wearing them, and although there is a strong resemblance, I think these are uglier, so I can’t see the justification in paying up for these.

AJ, unfortunately I’m old enough to remember the 70’s, too, but I don’t remember the original sandals. I actually think these new ones look pretty good, but I guess that’s an individual choice.
